A great tattoo doesn’t end when you leave the studio — how you care for it in the following weeks determines how it heals, how vibrant the colors stay, and how it looks years down the line. Here’s the aftercare routine our artists at Sophia Tattoo recommend to every client.

The First 24 Hours

Leave the initial bandage on for the time your artist recommends, typically two to four hours. Once removed, gently wash the area with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, antibacterial soap, then pat it dry with a clean paper towel — never rub.

Days 1–7: Keep It Clean and Moisturized

Wash your tattoo one to two times a day and apply a thin layer of fragrance-free healing ointment or lotion. Over-applying product can suffocate the skin and slow healing, so less is more.

What to Avoid

“UV exposure is the single biggest factor in color fading over time — SPF 30+ is the best long-term investment in your tattoo.”

Weeks 2–4: The Peeling and Itching Stage

It’s normal for your tattoo to peel and itch as it heals — resist the urge to scratch. Keep moisturizing with a gentle, unscented lotion, and the flaking will resolve on its own.

Long-Term Care

Once fully healed, keep your tattoo protected with SPF 30+ sunscreen whenever it’s exposed to the sun. UV exposure is the single biggest factor in color fading over time.

When to Contact Your Artist

Mild redness and swelling are normal for the first few days. If you notice excessive swelling, pus, red streaking, or fever, contact your artist or a medical professional — these can be signs of infection.

Every client at Sophia Tattoo leaves with written aftercare instructions tailored to their specific piece and placement. Questions during healing? Reach out to our studio anytime.
